If you looked up the FYP meaning, someone probably wrote "this is all over my fyp" and you nodded along. Fair. TikTok itself barely uses the acronym (it says "For You feed," or "FYF" in the rulebook), so the slang got ahead of the docs.
The TikTok facts below come straight from TikTok's Help Center, Transparency Center and Community Guidelines. Where TikTok hasn't said something (hello, #fyp), we say so.

What does FYP mean on TikTok?#
FYP stands for For You Page. It's the stream of videos TikTok shows you when you open the app, ranked for you specifically. Everyone's For You feed is different, even if the same big videos show up in a lot of them.
It sits next to the Following feed, which only shows creators you follow. For You is different on purpose: TikTok says it adds new creators, and sometimes videos outside your usual interests, so you discover new stuff.
Dictionary.com traces "FYP" back to at least 2018 and says it took off with TikTok's boom around summer 2019. Now people use it for any app's recommendation feed.
What does FYP mean in comments, captions and texts?#
| You see | What it means |
|---|---|
| "#fyp" in a caption | The creator hopes the video reaches strangers' For You feeds. Usually paired with #foryou and #foryoupage |
| "fyp" or "#fyp" as a comment | A viewer trying to give the video a boost (a nice gesture, not a proven lever) |
| "This was on my FYP" | TikTok recommended it. They didn't search for it |
| "It made it to the FYP" | The video reached people beyond the creator's followers |
| "My FYP is all cats now" | The algorithm figured them out, or misread them badly |
| "FYP" in a uni group chat | Probably "final year project." Nothing to do with TikTok |
How does the For You page decide what to show you?#
TikTok's Transparency Center lays it out. Your activity turns into signals, the system scores how likely you are to interact with each candidate video, and the top scorers make your feed. In TikTok's order:
- Select eligible videos that passed moderation.
- Predict how likely you are to like, share, comment on, skip or finish each one, and combine that into a score.
- Rank by score.
- Similarity check: swap out picks that are too alike (same sound, say).
- Apply rules, like including creators from your region and keeping content from accounts under 16 out.
Those signals fall into three groups. Here's how TikTok's Help Center groups them, with its own examples:

- User interactions: videos you like, share, comment on, watch in full or skip, plus follow-backs. TikTok says that for most users these "are generally weighted more heavily than others," and they can include time spent watching.
- Content information: sounds, hashtags, view count and the country a video was posted from. The Transparency Center adds post time, video length and the creator's language.
- User information: device type and settings, language, location, time zone and day.
TikTok's 2020 newsroom post gives the clearest weighting example: finishing a longer video is a strong signal, while you and the creator being in the same country is a weak one. Device and account settings get lower weight because you never actively chose them as preferences.
Other people's taste counts too. If someone who liked the same videos as you also liked one you haven't seen, TikTok may predict you'll like it.
Followers, oddly, don't. The 2020 post says neither follower count nor past hits feed the system directly; big accounts just have more people watching. (The current Help Center does list a video's view count as content information.)
And the feed fights repetition. TikTok generally won't show two videos in a row from the same creator or with the same sound, and it skips videos you've already seen.
Does #fyp actually work?#
Straight answer: nobody outside TikTok knows, because TikTok has never said. Its newsroom, Help Center, Transparency Center and Community Guidelines don't mention #fyp as a boost or a penalty.
What TikTok does say: hashtags are one example of content information, next to sounds, view count and country. User interactions generally weigh more for most users. And viewers can filter hashtags out of their own feeds.
So #fyp is a hashtag like any other, one small signal among many. Our read (not TikTok's): it says nothing about what your video is about, so it's hard to see what it tells the system. It breaks no rule we could find, but don't expect it to carry a video. If you want hashtags to earn their spot, use a few that describe what's actually in it.
How do you get on the FYP?#
There's no switch. TikTok's guidelines say plainly that no video is guaranteed a recommendation. What TikTok's own pages point to:
- Make videos people finish and react to. Watching in full, likes, shares and comments are the interactions TikTok says weigh the most.
- Be original. Reposting other people's clips without creative edits, or posting barely edited stuff like clips made only from GIFs, makes a video ineligible.
- Stay inside the eligibility rules (next section). If an account posts a lot of ineligible content, TikTok may make the whole account harder to find.
- Disclose ads. TikTok can pull undisclosed commercial content from the For You feed.
- Check analytics before you panic. It shows if a video was made ineligible, and you can appeal. Low views alone don't mean you broke a rule.
- Give it a minute. The 2020 post says brand-new uploads and videos under review may not be eligible yet.
What TikTok doesn't publish: a magic posting time, video length or hashtag. Anyone selling you one is guessing.
What makes a video ineligible for the For You feed?#
TikTok's Community Guidelines (the 2026 H2 version, effective September 24, 2026) put "FYF Ineligible" lists inside each policy section. Ineligible videos stay up, and people can still find them through search or your profile. They just won't be recommended. The examples most likely to catch normal creators:
| Category | What TikTok lists as ineligible for the For You feed |
|---|---|
| Unoriginal content | Reuploads without creative edits (like clips showing someone else's watermark or logo), low-effort clips made only from GIFs |
| Fake engagement | Content that pushes people to send gifts or inflate likes and follows |
| Misinformation | Claims that could cause moderate harm, unverified claims about crises or elections, anything under fact-check review |
| Shocking content | The build-up to a serious accident, fictional graphic violence, jump scares |
| Dangerous stunts | Activities that risk moderate physical harm (also restricted to 18+) |
| Sexualized content | Significant adult body exposure, intimate kissing or sexually suggestive acts between adults (also 18+) |
| Regulated goods | Gambling, cannabis, adult tobacco or vaping, firearms, and alcohol in some regions |
| Harassment | Hostile, profane language aimed at a private person |
| Politics | Suspected paid political ads, false claims about official civic information |
TikTok also limits repeat doses of things that are fine once but not on a loop, like extreme fitness or dieting, sadness or sexually suggestive content.
Is there an FYP on Instagram, YouTube and X?#
Every big app has one. Nobody else calls it an FYP, but people use the word anyway. What each platform says about its own feed:
| App | Its "FYP" | Shows accounts you don't follow? | What the platform says it ranks on |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | For You feed | Yes, it adds new creators on purpose | Interactions (likes, shares, comments, watching in full or skipping) weigh most for most users |
| Reels tab | Mostly, per Instagram | Predicts reshares, full watches, likes and audio-page visits. Weighs your activity, your history with the poster, the reel, and the poster's popularity (followers included) | |
| Explore | Mostly, per Instagram | Post popularity first (how many people like, comment, share and save, and how fast), then your own activity | |
| YouTube | Shorts feed | Yes, from any channel you might watch | Share of viewers who chose to watch, average view duration and % viewed, then likes and post-watch surveys |
| X | "For you" tab | Sometimes, per X | How popular a post is and how people in your network interact with it |
Fun contrast: Instagram counts follower count as a popularity signal for Reels, while TikTok said in 2020 that it isn't a direct factor. Instagram also shows watermarked or reposted reels less, which rhymes with TikTok's unoriginal-content rule.
Want more shots at the FYP? (Disclosure: this part is about our product)#
Nobody can sell you a spot on the For You page, and that includes us. What you control is how many good, original short videos you put in front of the system.
That's why we built DumbSMM, a free AI social media toolbox:
- Clips turns a YouTube link or an upload of your own long video into captioned vertical clips. No watermark.
- Create makes short videos (UGC-style ads, product demos, memes) from your website.
- The AI scheduler queues approved posts for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, so you post steadily without babysitting three apps.
It won't pick trending sounds or tell you what will hit. And clipping another creator's footage is still unoriginal content to TikTok, so point it at your own.
FYP meaning FAQ#
What does FYP stand for?#
For You Page. It's TikTok's personalized feed of recommended videos. TikTok officially calls it the For You feed, and its Community Guidelines shorten that to FYF.
What does FYP mean in a text or comment?#
Usually it means someone's TikTok For You feed: "this was on my FYP" means TikTok recommended it. Commenting "#fyp" under a video is a viewer trying to boost it. In a university group chat, FYP can also mean final year project.
Does putting #fyp in your caption help?#
TikTok has never said either way. It lists hashtags as one kind of content information and says user interactions generally weigh more. Nothing in its rules says #fyp hurts, but don't count on it to help.
How do I reset my FYP?#
TikTok has a refresh option that shows your For You feed as if you just signed up, then relearns from your new interactions. It keeps your settings and the accounts you follow. You can also long-press a video and pick "Not interested," filter out keywords and hashtags, or manage topics.
Why isn't my video getting on the FYP?#
Check TikTok analytics first. It flags videos made ineligible for recommendation, and you can appeal. If nothing is flagged, the video probably isn't getting the interactions TikTok weighs most.
Can you turn off the FYP?#
Only in some places. In the EU and Kazakhstan you can turn off personalized feeds, and For You becomes a Popular feed of trending videos. Everywhere else you can steer it (Not interested, keyword filters, refresh) but not switch it off.
